Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2025

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale (Ballarat Foto) is a world-class arts organisation delivering an internationally significant photographic arts festival activating the city of Ballarat and enriching the cultural landscape of Victoria and Australia every two years.

2025 is the 11th anniversary of the festival which was established in 2005. Since its inception Ballarat Foto has seen audiences grow to over 250000 and has contributed more than $28 million in direct economic impact.

Over 60 days from August to October Ballarat Foto delivers

- A curated Core Program showcasing Australian and international artists;
- An Open Program of new artists;
- Workshops and public programs artist-in-residence and more.

Lifeforce

The 2025 Ballarat International Foto Biennale centres on Lifeforce-a theme that pulses with intensity intimacy and resistance.

This year's program draws on the power of photography to reveal what it means to be alive: to endure to question to create and to connect. There is a life force in all of us a force that distinguishes between the living and non-living. In the artistic world it is more - a spark that propels an artist to leap over barriers to express interpret and capture this energy in unique ways.

Ballarat is a perfect backdrop for this festival as its businesses venues laneways and historic venues become a full city living exhibition a trail for visitors to appreciate something unique at every turn.

Festival Hub
Located at the Mining Exchange 12 Lydiard Street North the Festival Hub is a short 2-minute walk from the Ballarat Train Station. Buy tickets and browse our range of limited edition prints books merchandise and fun photo products.

Venues
The Core Program venues are Town Hall (225 Sturt Street) Post Office Gallery (cnr Sturt and Lydiard Street North) Ballarat Mining Exchange (12 Lydiard Street North) 101 Lydiard Street North The Miners Tavern (120 Lydiard Street North) and the Ballarat GovHub (101 Armstrong Street North).

Open from 10am to 4pm daily every day. Outdoor Program public art is open 24/7. Open Program venues have various opening hours and these are noted in the Festival Guide and on the website.

Heads up: Art Gallery of Ballarat is closed for building upgrades. Reopen early 2026.

Festival Guides
The official 2025 Festival Guide is available for sale at the Festival Hub in Lydiard Street North. The Festival Guide is $5.00 and contains detailed information about each exhibition including location maps.
