Form and Function presents a selection of works by artists recognised for their significant contributions to the development of Australian studio ceramics.
Among these are Merric Boyd and his son Arthur who with fellow artist John Perceval established the Arthur Merric Boyd Pottery (AMB) in 1944 to produce utilitarian ceramics in short supply during the Second World War.
AMB employed local artists to hand paint unique wares featuring Australian plants and animals in their designs.
Through their work at Sturt Pottery in the late 1950s and '60s major artists Les Blakebrough Gwyn Hanssen Pigott and Col Levy adopted an experimental approach using local clays and traditional Japanese techniques to produce distinctly Australian ceramics.
The exhibition also features figurative works produced from the 1970s onwards by artists who rejected traditional ceramic aesthetics in favour of the forms and imagery of popular culture.
A Geelong Gallery exhibition
